For Soldiers one. Special to Journal. Raleigh, December 10. The term of the Federal Court here will certainly continue all this week. Judge Purnell is thoroughly feared by the defendants in thta court, and they are begging for a continuance. Three white men have been convicted of counterfeiting. There were great crowds at the Sun day services of the Baptists here. Their Bute Convention held three sessions in order that It might end Its work today. At the First Baptist church Rev. Dr. Wllllngham, of Richmond, preached a sermon of great power. It Is quite apparent here that one at least of the Raleigh papers will make a fight against another issue of street bonds. The .people will probably vote on that question In Hay. The labor here Is rapidly being organ ized Into unions. One man is pushing the movement. The small grain In this section of the Bute looks very well. Here and there a little gleaning of the cotton in the fields Is being done. It Is doubtful thst this crop was ever cleaner ploked. The corporation commission meets Wednesday. It will hear argument by the Seaboard Air Line's attorneys on that railroad's exceptions to the recent order of the commission reducing the freight rate on hickory, gum, dogwood snd persimmon logs. - Gen. Thomas F. Toon, who will next month take charge of the office of Su perintendent of Public Instruction, ap points John W. Duckett, a veteran ed ucator of Lumberton, his chief clerk. An engine has been put In operation at the Soldiers' Home, for supplying water to the various buildings. In s few days connection will be make with the Raleigh e;wer system, as 1100 feet of pipe is now being laid. The Baptists are working great gains In membership. It was surprising to lesrn to-dsy that In this county tbey have more then 100 churches and over SO preachers. Plans are In hands for the 13,000 main building of the Methodist Orphan age here. It Is the purpose to hsve it built In twelve months. Gen. Julian S. Carr will tall a con vention of Ex-Confederate Veterans, to be held here In February, at which the Legislature will be memorialised to In crease the appropriations for the Sol diers' Home and for pensions. Endorsement of Littleton Female College By Educational Board of Conference. The strong endorsement given Little ton Female College by the Board of Education of the Methodist Conference, at its session, jeslerday, was most worthily bestowed, and also showed the appreciation in which this Institution is held. Littleton Female College has a Lre patronage In this section and Its friends bear full testimony by word and letter that It is doing a great work for the cilu cation of young women. The report of this Institution to the Conference, showed decided progress during the past year.
